Frequently Asked Questions

The information on this page is for the viewer's general information. For answers to specific questions about your home or business please Contact US.

Why should I hire Shumaker's Pest Control when I could try to do it myself?
Quite a few customers call us in frustration after they have already wasted time and money buying and applying over the counter products to control their roach, ant, spider, flea or other general pest problems. Shumaker's will solve your problem efficiently without you having to buy, apply or store pesticides. Homeowners very often over apply pesticides, resulting in unnecessary personal exposure, or potential environmental harm.
Is my home inspection Free?
We offer free termite home inspections if the house is not for sale or in escrow. We do charge a nominal fee for termite inspections in commercial and multi-unit complexes.
What type of materials do you use and how toxic are they?
All our materials are guaranteed to be non-toxic and are safe for your family, pets and customers. All professional pest control products we use have been registered for use by the United States EPA.
Do I have to empty my cupboards before the interior of my house is sprayed or treated?
Not usually, but sometimes, depending on the pest and the type of treatment. For German Cockroaches it may be necessary to remove all the food and dishes to allow us to get access to every cockroach hiding place we can find.
Help! I have bed bugs. Can you get rid of them?
Yes, but be prepared for a major effort. Bedbugs are perhaps the most difficult pests we face. Please call us to discuss your problem and the solution.
What are termites?
Termites are wood-destroying insects. Their presence dates back to the dinosaurs. While they play an important role in nature, experts estimate they cause $5 billion of property damage each year.
How can I tell the difference between a flying ant and a termite?
There are 3 easy ways to tell flying ants and termites apart:
Wing size:
Termite wings are all equal in length and extend well past the abdomen. Ants have wings which are unequal in length and generally end at the tip of the abdomen.
Antennae shape:
Antennae on termites are straight and bead-like, but on ants they are elbowed.
Waist size:
Ants have a pinched waist, but termites have no constriction in the body and are more streamlined.
How difficult are termites to treat?
Termites are nearly impossible for homeowners to treat on their own. On the other hand, pest management professionals have the training, expertise and technology to eliminate termite infestations.
My current provider has been spraying my facility for a pest problem, but the bugs keep coming back. What’s the problem?
Effective pest control involves much more than just applying pesticide. To combat any pest problem, it is critical to do a comprehensive inspection of the facility to correctly identify the pest, locate harborage areas and to identify possible entry points. All potential pest-entry points should be sealed. Pesticides should be used only as needed and when targeting a specific pest species. Using pesticides improperly may even cause pest infestations to worsen. For best results, you may want to consult another professional pest control company to take advantage of their knowledge and training to combat pest problems. What is Termidor and how reliable is it?
Termidor is a professionally applied termite defense product that is undetectable to drywood and subterranean termites. Since its introduction, over 4 million homes have been protected with Termidor, making it America’s #1 termite defense product.

Termidor is made from a nonrepellent or “undetectable” chemical technology. In numerous trials across the United States and around the world, Termidor has consistently proven itself to be the most effective product at eliminating termites—a level of efficacy that no other commercially available termite control system of any type has ever achieved. And, Termidor is proving to be equally effective in keeping termites from coming back.

Ongoing field trials by the United States Department of Agriculture – Forest Service show no signs of termite damage in covered slab plots treated at labeled rates Termidor® 80 WG for more than 15 years after treatment—results no other commercially available termite control product can match.
How long does it take to complete a Termidor treatment?
A residential Termidor termite treatment is typically completed by a trained Termidor Certified Professional in less than a day, offering your home or building termite protection that begins immediately.
Why is the Advance Termite Bait System the ideal choice for primary protection of a home?
•Advance Termite Bait Stations monitor, detect, and eliminate colonies that are currently in your home or that may invade your home in the future.
•Advance provides long-term protection of your home and is always on guard for new termites foraging around your home.
•Advance is low impact to the environment and your pets. Children have no contact with the active ingredient as it is secured below ground in the station housing.
•Advance utilizes the latest termite research and technology available. It features the ultra low disturbance station design that keeps termites feeding voraciously on the Puri-Cell™ bait matrix, which leads to colony elimination.
If I didn't see any pests, can I skip a service?
Remember, when we do our best job you will not see a problem. For us to maintain control, we must perform all of your services.
What is the connection between pests and asthma in children?
Cockroaches are a leading trigger of allergies and asthma attacks. The pests' saliva, droppings and decomposing bodies contain allergen proteins known to trigger allergies and increase the severity of asthma symptoms, especially in children.
How can professional pest control help alleviate asthma?
Proper pest control will help prevent or remove pests that can trigger asthma. A pest management professional (often referred to as an exterminator) can inspect a home for these pests, treat and eliminate them and provide homeowners with recommendations to prevent reinfestation.
How are pests getting inside my house?
There are often many areas around the exterior of the home that can either be a pest attractant or an area conducive to pests. These may include vents, windows, eaves, debris around the home, landscaping issues, etc. Before applying treatment, we do an inspection and walk-around of your house to help identify any problem areas and make suggestions of what can be done to reduce pest pressure. We are happy to answer any questions you might have. Shumakers Pest Control is looking after your home and property!
